Why Are My Gums Bleeding?

Bleeding gums can be a little bit concerning, but it’s no reason to panic. Gums can bleed for a wide variety of reasons; some minor, and some more serious. Brushing Your Teeth

Some people experience bleeding gums after brushing their teeth for a few reasons. One reason is that your toothbrush may be too hard. If you have sensitive gums and a toothbrush with particularly hard bristles, brushing can cause bleeding. Bleeding gums can also be caused by brushing too hard. Try brushing a little more gently in circular patterns or use an electric spinning toothbrush. Bristles that are too hard or vigorous brushing can also cause you to damage the enamel on your teeth, so it should be avoided whenever possible.

Gum Disease

A far more concerning cause of bleeding gums is gum disease. Gum disease, also known as gingivitis, occurs when plaque deteriorates the gum line causing soreness and puffy, bleeding gums. Gingivitis is caused by a lack of proper brushing, flossing, and oral health care. When gingivitis becomes advanced, it is known as periodontitis: an infection that can cause your teeth to loosen or fall out. The best way to avoid gum disease is to practice good oral health both at home and at your dental office: brush and floss twice per day, and be sure to see your dentist at least once every six months.

Other Causes

Bleeding gums can also be caused by a wide range of other problems. These include vitamin deficiencies, poorly fitting dentures, hormonal changes, pregnancy, bleeding disorders, and more. If you have concerns about your gums bleeding, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist right away!
