What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealant is a thin, liquid-plastic material that is painted onto the teeth (usually the molars) and designed to help protect teeth from plaque. Sealants are an effective yet inexpensive procedure that has been proven to prevent 80% of cavities for two years after application, according to the CDC. According to the same research, dental sealants also protect against 50% of cavities for up to four years. Dental sealants are especially important for children, as studies show that school-aged children without sealants have three times as many cavities as those with them, on average.

Benefits Of Dental Sealants

As mentioned above, dental sealants are incredibly effective at preventing decay and cavities, especially in children. In some cases, dental sealants can last a lifetime, but in most cases, they will need to be replaced periodically. It’s recommended that children whose teeth are still developing get dental sealant replacements every few years until their teeth and mouth are fully grown. Other than preventing cavities, dental sealants are also beneficial for ensuring that teeth stay intact after being drilled or filled.

The Dental Sealant Application Procedure

The best part about the dental sealant application process is that it is completely painless and non-invasive! First, your dentist will clean and dry your teeth. Next, they’ll apply a gel-like substance that will help the sealants adhere to your teeth. Finally, the dental sealants will be applied to the grooves on the bottom side of your molars and hardened using a blue light. Dental sealants typically last for several years before needing to be removed or replaced, but your dentist will make sure that your sealants are in good condition at each biannual checkup. Even with dental sealants, good oral hygiene practices are necessary to maximize their effectiveness at preventing cavities & decay! Be sure you and your children are brushing twice daily, flossing at least once daily, and seeing your dentist for a checkup & cleaning every six months!
