Three Common Dental Problems & Their Symptoms

Cavities & Tooth Decay

One of the most common problems that people face with their oral health is cavities caused by tooth decay. Cavities are tiny holes in the teeth that are the result of bacteria eating through the tooth’s enamel after plaque builds up on it. Symptoms of a cavity can include toothaches, sensitivity, and noticeable craters in teeth. If cavities go untreated for a long period of time, they can lead to infections, the need for root canal procedures, and tooth loss. If you believe that you may have a cavity, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist!

Gum Disease

Another common dental problem that many patients face is gum disease, also known as gingivitis in early stages and periodontitis in later stages. In early stages, when gum disease is classified as gingivitis, symptoms include gums that are swollen, bleeding, and sensitive to the touch. When gingivitis is treated properly and promptly with good oral hygiene and visits to the dentist, its effects can be reversed. When the condition of your gums continues to get worse, gum disease is classified as periodontitis. Periodontitis symptoms include all of the symptoms listed above, plus shifting of the teeth, deep gum pockets, gum abscesses, pain, and tooth loss.

Tooth Infections & Dental Abscesses

Tooth infections and dental abscesses are the results of bacterial infections that stem from untreated cavities and decay. Infections in the root of the tooth and dental abscesses are often treated using root canal procedures, which involves the dentist drilling into the root of the tooth in order to drain the affected area. Symptoms of infections and dental abscesses can include serious toothaches, pain when eating, fever, swelling of the jaw and neck, swollen lymph nodes, and bad tastes in the mouth. If you suspect you may have a dental abscess, you should speak to a dentist as soon as possible, as these infections can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
